What you need before you start
The account details, devices and network you need to use Communicator.
Communicator Go (mobile) and Communicator Next (desktop and web) are apps for your business phone system. They don't create a phone line on their own: they sign in to an extension that already exists on your company's system.
Your account details
Before you install anything, make sure you have a welcome email or sign-in details from your administrator or service provider. It usually contains:
- Your username (often your email address) and a temporary password
- The server address your app connects to
- A sign-in QR code for the mobile app
- Your extension number and voicemail PIN
- Download links for the desktop app
Keep this email until you have signed in on every device. The QR code may stop working once you change your password, so you might need a fresh one. See Sign in to Communicator.
Supported devices
| App | Runs on |
|---|---|
| Communicator Go | iPhone and iPad (iOS / iPadOS 15.1 or later), Android phones, Apple silicon Macs |
| Communicator Next | Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple silicon), Linux, and current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari |
Network
Both apps make calls over the internet. A stable Wi-Fi or 4G/5G connection works well. Roughly 100 kbps each way per call is enough for audio; video meetings need more. If you're on a corporate or hotel network that blocks calling traffic, see Poor call quality or dropped calls.
Headset
A wired or Bluetooth headset gives the best audio, especially on a computer. Built-in speakers and microphones work, but can cause echo.
